About Us

Think of Tax By Design as the old Main Street accountant, the one who knew you, your business, and your family, and who you’d still be working with ten years later. That kind of relationship mostly disappeared as firms scaled into call centers and seasonal staff.

Meet Our Founders

Founding partners Matt Rosenberg, CPA, and Sakar Pudasaini, CPA, first met when they were randomly assigned as roommates their freshman year at Johns Hopkins University. In the years since, their friendship has held up even as they lived across different states, different countries,  and periods on entirely different continents. That’s the foundation of how they built the firm: a relationship doesn’t need physical proximity to last, it needs consistency and trust over time.

Tax By Design is built on that same idea. Digital tools mean a client doesn’t need to walk into a storefront to get the old Main Street relationship: the direct line to someone who knows their file, the same team year over year, and a call or message that gets answered instead of routed through a queue. Clients reach the team by phone, video, or in person if they’re nearby, and the relationship holds up, and stays responsive, regardless of which one they choose.

Our Philosophy

John Lennon made famous the line that life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans. Your taxes, however, shouldn’t just happen to you, discovered suddenly on a form one April. They should be designed: the result of thought, conversation, and a decision made ahead of time.

Taxes also carry a lifetime cost, not just a yearly one. Each year’s bill matters, but at Tax By Design we’re thinking about the arc of your income, your entity, and your goals over time, not just the twelve months in front of you. It’s easy to lose the forest for the trees when a decision only gets evaluated against this year’s return. We try to keep both in view.

Our Approach

We start with a full picture: your entity structure, income sources, and goals, to see where tax is actually being lost, not just what the last return said. From there we build a roadmap, naming the specific moves, their timing, and the projected savings, then model this year and the years ahead so no decision gets made blind. A raise, a sale, an entity change, or equity vesting gets projected before it happens, not discovered after.

The same team that builds the plan also implements it, files the return, and represents you if the IRS has questions. There’s no hand-off between the person who plans and the person who files.

From there we stay involved. Tax decisions don’t wait for filing season, so you can reach us when something comes up, whether that’s a new hire, equity vesting, or a decision to sell. We revisit the plan every year as income, entity, and tax law change, so a strategy that fit last year keeps working this year.

Who We Work With

Individuals

People with equity compensation, capital gains, investments, or income that's complex or variable year to year. We focus on income timing, equity decisions, and investment structure so your personal taxes support your goals rather than work against them.

Small Business Owners

Owners whose personal and business taxes have to be managed together, not separately. This is where the S-corp election, the Colorado PTE election, retirement plan design, and decisions like hiring a spouse actually move the needle, and where treating the business and the personal return as one picture matters most.

Businesses

Entity-level work for companies that need more than a return filed once a year: payroll, owner and employee compensation planning, equity and vesting schedules, and accounting done correctly throughout the year so the numbers are right before tax season starts.

Global & Cross-Border

US citizens with international income or assets, whether they live in the US or abroad, and foreign nonresident-owned enterprises operating in the US. We handle FBAR and FATCA reporting, foreign tax credit positions, and US filings for tax payers with global income.

Across all four client types, we cover tax planning, tax preparation, and sales tax compliance as one practice rather than separate services, since most clients who need one eventually need the others.
